Anna hummed as she paced around her cottage, eyes searching the forest, before ducking inside and sitting on the edge of the flooring in the smokehouse. There was no smoke wafting upwards at the moment, no curls and tendrils in the air that brought about the prettiest haze and strained Anna's lungs.
"... Не ложися на краю..."
The lullaby drifted through the air, soothing Anna's nerves and bringing the whole world to a place where it made much more sense and her world was clear-cut. It felt like someone else was there, and she was not alone in this cruel world that left her where she sat. She kicked her feet, gently, and took off her mask, brushing off some of the dirt in one of the ears.
"...Придёт серенький... волчок..."
She always hummed, the noises of the forest not being enough, most days. Most hours. Most minutes.
Maybe another child, or another person, would hear, and wander closer.
Anna cast her gaze to the branches and woodchips that lay below.

Anna was right, a child would happen across her... As Susie had multiple times, the shared red forest was a place that the girl had come to enjoy wandering, as big as it was. The Huntress' lullaby foreign to her for the moment. Susie always attributed it to birds. She'd never quite gone hunting for the source. No reason to, if she believed it was an Entity trick. Today was different, today there were words. Weird. The Entity never changed things in a major way, especially since she probably didn't know how. Susie set out to remember where the building in the forest was, she'd been to it before, although vacant. She made her way to it, eyes widening at the sight of an unmasked woman. So this was someone's realm. How bad she felt knowing that now, after lingering in it time and time again... She doubted she was in any danger, especially from another killer. "Uh, hello?" Susie called out, she could only imagine how she looked in these woods to the woman before her. Bright pink hair had to stand out in the dark forest. Maybe she should dye it blue, again. Just like when she was thirteen.
The voice made Anna snap her head to whomever it belonged; her thoughts caught up and she pushed off into the pile of chips and wood. She looked up, seeing the edge of the veil on the mask she wore within reach - she could simply grab it--
Wait. The voice sounded... not young, like the smallest of her little ones, not young like that. But it had a cadence to it that brought her to think that perhaps this one... did not mean her harm, like the rough, low voices of men did. Maybe this one was just curious. Anna glanced at her hip, her throwing hatchet still in its loop like always. If this voice meant her harm, she did not face it unarmed.
"Eh-" she scrambled for words, English always being the language that failed her. "You, see? Mask, white, pass." Hopefully those words communicated her concept clear enough. There was no way she could face the stranger with her natural face - the mask usually shadowed her upper lip, damaged from frostbite, where it pulled up to show a glint of teeth, and her veil covered her shaved head. That seemed suitable enough for strangers. The mask never made the little ones cry.
Susie squinted, confused... She had no idea what the Huntress had attempted to communicate. "You... Want me to take my mask off?" She asked softly, still keeping a little bit of distance. Just in case. What the hell could those words mean in that order, if not to take her own mask off? Truth be told, she didn't want to. She didn't put any makeup on, and she couldn't tell what this person could intend to do with her visage... She tried to study the woman's face before her, but the bunny mask made it hard. Dark holes for eyes, presumably more lace filled the holes. Kept people from seeing her eyes, and identifying her. Julie and Frank taught her about that. It's why theirs had very small holes, and she had made hers split like it did. Joey's was cloth, because he was smarter than the others. "... I don't really wanna, to be honest," Susie called back, after breaking herself out of her thoughts.
Anna looked up at her mask, let out a deep sigh, and nodded. "Okay," she told the little girl, grasping the veil of her own mask and putting it on.
She looked back at the girl, finally comfortable, and reached up to the edge she just slipped off, grasping it firmly with both hands and jumping to get a leg up. Once she did, she grunted and pulled herself back up onto the floor, standing for a moment and popping her neck. She looked back at Susie, sort of shimmying her shoulders for a moment to get her muscles to rest. The girl was just outside her cottage, and didn't seem to have much on her, posing no clear threat. Anna chuckled.
"You, small," she told Susie, stepping forward. "New. In Mother Huntress' forest?" She thought for a moment, picking through the English she knew to ask this child how long she had been here, and if she was comfortable. Anna thought for what possibly could have been too long, and chuckled to herself, thinking that she must have looked absurd, standing here thinking and mumbling to herself as she struggled to communicate. Anna knew English used articles like "the", which always seemed unnecessary and stupid. What else could she be referring to? "You, like here? Safe, here? Find happy?" That was the best she had to convey her meaning, hoping to get it across and debating what other words she could use if her meaning was not clear enough.
Susie felt like she should be offended, and in any other situation being called 'small'... She would be!
The tall woman in front of her though, as broad and threatening as she was... Susie wasn't scared. "Yeah, like... Five two. I'm pretty small," So quick witted. Her smart mouth would get her in trouble someday soon. It probably fell flat on Anna, though, considering the language barrier. Susie nodded, shrugging. "Fairly new? I have come here before. Mostly the outskirts." She gestured towards where she walked from, she was also careful to enunciate her words... Maybe it would help communication. She rarely spoke to people that she had this much of a language barrier with. Joey's family was the worst it ever got, but even then she picked up on a bunch of French.
Now, when the woman chuckled Susie felt like a fish out of water. Maybe she shouldn't have approached- who knew what the woman's intentions were, after all? But how could she be threatening? She wasn't armed, that Susie had noticed yet anyways. Susie focused carefully on Anna's words, trying to push past the way she had chuckled to herself, and made no explanation for it. "It's nice here. Cozy." Susie responded, much nicer than home. That went unsaid, though. "Yeah, safe and happy here." Even if Anna would mistake her for a survivor, and attempt to kill her she'd still feel safer in this forest than in the ski lodge sometimes. Not that they would hurt her, it was just hostile ever since they'd gotten into the Fog.
Anna smiled and gestured into the house, turning her back and walking in. "дома," she told Susie, gesturing at the cottage and settling in a little more. "дома, home, Mother Huntress no mask." She took off her mask again, hanging the item on a nail she passed as she moved through. "Make comfort. Safe home."
She walked to the back area of the smoking area, picking up some of the long-dead and certainly bloodless animals and, with a glance back to see if Susie was watching, she shuffled closer to in front of the view and shoved a knife in it to start to strip some of the skin off so she could make a blanket and have more food for herself prepared. Her shirt, stiff on the sides from dirt, shuffed against her arms and shifted to expose cracks in the dirt, something that bothered Anna. She never really had time to change around outfits, keeping up with each day's catches between trials and keeping hides from the larger animals circulating. Unaware of social conventions, Anna continued her task, content with the other being in or coming into her home and seeing no need to entertain. Conversation she decided to leave up entirely to the girl; Anna herself felt comfortable sitting in the silence besides the sounds from her knife on and in the animal.

Susie figured out what the woman meant, finally. This was her home — Susie was to make herself comfortable, too. She could do that...She thought. She stepped closer to the house, following the woman into the doorway.
Frank once told her not to do things like this, don't follow people into houses... Strangers, especially. What would this beefcake of a woman do, though? If she killed Susie, she would wake right back up on the second floor of the lodge.
She stood, hands in her hoodie pocket as she watched the woman's actions. The way she didn't seem to pay attention to Susie confused her, going on to skin an animal. She should be running, afraid, but for whatever reason she felt an odd sense of comfort in the shack. Studying the building, the skins that were already laid out. They seemed stretched, and cleaned already. It was something she hadn't seen in awhile. She was too young before she was taken from the reserves to do any thing like this with her family. "What's your name?" Susie finally broke the silence, figuring that was a good first question. Something easy to answer, easy to communicate.
Anna looked back at Susie, thinking about the answer. It wasn't a hard question, but it was one Anna often questioned. "Anna," she answered, her shoulders falling slack as she put down the knife and animal and ran a hand through her hair, hardly an inch long. She walked along the wall for a moment, turning to the right and pulling an old, soft pelt from the shelf. She paced back and held it out to Susie; an offering. "Sit, there," Anna told Susie, other arm pointing to a nearby rocking chair. "Name, you?" she asked, the healthy side of her mouth pulling up into a smile, muscle pulling under skin to show a dimple. The other side of her mouth stood... limp, almost, as she tried not to show expressions too much in case it pulled more at the split scar in her lip. The left side of her face stood a little too scarred from frost or fire to show any sort of dimple the other side showed.
Anna. Anna. Anna. Okay! She got that, that was a pretty name! "Pretty." Susie complimented easily, a certain kind of cheer in her voice. She wasn't succeeding in making herself comfortable, but she was trying. She was trying real hard. She wanted this to be normal, it was so nice in here. The animal skins didn't even bother her, she was never in a family of hunters but it was something that friends families did in the past so... It wasn't all that out of place to her.
Looking over to where Anna instructed her to sit, it wouldn't hurt to sit down she thought. So she did as she was instructed, taking the item that was presented to her. "Susie," Came her easy reply, and the return of a smile, although there was no frostbite on Susie's face, just bright pink rubber bands in her mouth, and shiny metal. Anna was pretty, it was something that was easier to see when she could actually get a full view of the woman's face. Since she was closer, here than she was moments ago. It took all the restraint in her body to not ask about the frostbite, and the scarring. It was impolite, and most of all not her business. That was something she had a hard time keeping in mind, something that not having a lot of friends kind of fucked her over with. Not just blurting out any old question that ran through her mind. She could do that to Julie, Joey or Frank and they could brush her off, not feel pressured to respond. But others? Maybe they would feel like she was disrespectful, when really she just had no filter, she was curious by nature, and especially in a place where nothing made sense.
Anna was not the kind of person Susie should be speaking to, should she still be alive. She looked, and lived like someone that woods witch stories would be written about. Ooh, Susie! Did you hear about the story of l'ours femelle! It's said that she stalks a hidden cabin in the woods with hatchets, and she kills cats! ooh! That's so scary! I can't believe people could do that... It's okay, she isn't real.
Not that Susie thought Anna killed cats, it just sounded like childish rumours. Ones that she only eavesdropped, never got told them herself.
Tossing glances to where Susie sat, Anna hummed softly, a softer, warmer sound than would ever emit from her in a trial. She heard Susie’s name and thought for a moment, the name (thankfully) none too difficult to say for her. “S... suzie?” She frowned, just slightly, at her own hesitation.
Tossing glances at the small girl without, hopefully, making it obvious, Anna noticed Susie was holding in... something. Unfortunately, Anna found herself very unfamiliar with containing emotions, and thought Susie had to use the outhouse. She frowned again, this time visible, for a moment, running a hand over her short hair.
Anna found herself afraid, for a moment, that Susie would scare off, like the deer that would wander through the cottage when she was not there. She felt the need to take care of Susie; to make sure she was warm at night, and make sure she was comfortable during the day. The pelt (that Anna intended to make sure Susie left with) would make sure she was warm, and it was up to Anna to make sure Susie had a comfortable place to come to during the day. Anna’s room held her valuable possessions, like a brush (one that never saw use), and a bird foot (she believed it to be lucky), and a singular mirror, rimmed in gold. Anna made sure to keep that one polished, so the dirt wouldn’t scratch the surface.
Finally, she found words for what she wanted to ask. “Um,” —licked her lip— “Suuzie potty?” She asked, unaware of social conventions like ‘don’t talk about having to use the bathroom.’
Hearing Anna's humming was comforting, it was nice. She knew Anna hummed in trials, she'd heard that much at the campfire. When she eavesdropped. She didn't do that much anymore, getting caught was humiliating to say the very absolute least. "Yeah, that's right." She praised the older woman; English wasn't her first language so she didn't mind having to tell her that she was right, or wrong. When Anna frowned, Susie was worried she was in danger. This woman did have a multitude of axes, hatchets, and other... Items at her disposal. So you couldn't imagine the immediate relief when Anna finally spoke, asking her if she had to potty. She laughed softly; in shock. "Uhm, no... No, I don't. Thank you, though." She said gently. It was true, she didn't. She never really thought about it, or why Anna would have asked her something like that. The Realm was a lot weirder than she could have ever anticipated. That was a question she never would have been asked back in Ormond. She didn't even know how to explain to the woman that she was , in fact, potty trained and it wasn't something she had to worry about. So, for the time she didn't even try.
Anna bobbed her head up and down, offering the girl a smile without teeth. She moved over to Susie, pressing a kiss to her hand and pressing her hand to the teen's head before going back and returning to her task. "Want learn?" she offered, seeing Susie watch her movements as she moved to pluck the feathers out of another bird.
Anna felt comfortable, and unconcerned about her appearance, and her entire body seemed to be at rest and muscles that were built from use, day in and day out, all relaxed as Anna tossed feathers onto her dining room table, her hand picking up and flipping around her paring knife, a skill gained from a routine she accomplished daily with ease. Anna kept up a soft hum, her voice bringing her own mind at ease as she moved around.
"[Sleep my tiny darling one,]" she hummed, eyes occasionally flicking up to keep a tab on Susie and her level of discomfort or anxiety. Anxiety she didn't understand; the ability to put herself in Susie's shoes lacking, as clearly the only way Anna had experienced life was all on her own. As a thought crossed Anna's mind, she stopped humming for a moment.
"Suuzie safe at home?" she asked softly, preparing for whatever answer would come. "How you find Mother, little one? You safe, you cared for?"
