Joey was good at being a bother, good at befriending people. Rin Yamaoka was the current challenge, he enjoyed her company... When she would allow it. He wanted to know her better, she fit in so well with the Legion, er. Susie, and himself anyway...
So that's how he found himself tiptoeing around the Yamaoka Estate, hoping to avoid the Oni, but still find the Spirit. He'd never run into Kazan before, but he wasn't going to press his luck in disturbing the Yamaoka ancestor at all, but especially not now. Not when he was in the Estate, uninvited. He would be a moron for that. Truthfully, he was a moron for this too. He had his knife on him, he always did. Self defense, he needed it back in Ormond too. Now, he had been so quiet... So sneaky... The pager attached to his hip began to beep, like it always did. Like it did on that last day he was 'alive'. 911. 911. 911. His stomach sank, for more than one reason. He had definitely alerted someone in the Estate. He'd been hoping to surprise Rin, but this would just put her on guard. 911 was right, buddy. This was an emergency.
So, Joey Oliveira, improv king, began running in the opposite direction. His plan was to tell Rin that he had bumped into someone trying to sneak in, to cause some mischief but he had heroically chased them out ... Yeah! This would work.
Rin didn't exactly know much peace, even outside of trials. She lived in constant paranoia and agony, everywhere she went.. She could see him peering out of the corner for her eye, but everytime she turned her head to his direction. He had dissapeared. It was a constant cycle, Rin tried to tell herself to get over it.. That it was all in her head and that father wouldn't allow himself to be seen. Not like that. Not so obvious. All of Rin's desperately pleas with her mind never worked and thus, she lived on edge, ready at every moment to pounce.
So imagine Rin's surprise when she heard an unfamiliar and startling beeping.
Rin quickly turned her head towards the noise, she was sat in the living room of somewhere she once called home. This was no longer home, not with the bloodstained walls and the presence of Kazan Yamaoka lingering around. Rin was quick to retrieve her katana from her hand and make her way out of the home. It took her awhile to find anything of interest, but eventually she saw a.. somewhat familiar figure in the distance. She recognized the hoodie, at least the silhouette of it. Anger rising up in her, ready to boil over at any minute. What did he have any buisness doing here? Weren't there four of them? Were the other three here and were they going to hurt her? No. They weren't. They weren't that dumb.. Didn't seem that violent either.
And like that, Rin Yamaoka seemed to vanish into air. Entering a new realm of exsistence, completely undeteacted by killers and survivors alike. It was a quick travel as she would quickly find herself in close earshot of the other boy. Reappearing back into exsistence, Rin attempted to keep a stern and intimidating demeanor to her.. But she was quick to realize that, this could be a losing battle if she didn't play it right. The boy infront of her must have been at least a foot taller? Maybe more, She couldn't give an exact guess.
"I would assume you know how rude it is to walk in uninvited? Could have left your shoes at the door at least." A weak attempt at sarcasm that still managed to get a giggle out of herself. She cleared her throat to keep herself from going into a laughing fit over her own joke. "Answer me!.. Please." At first her voice was demanding, but soon that demanding yell turned into.. a pleading whisper.
Joey's rushing stopped when Rin appeared in front of him. With a start, he fell flat on his ass. Before he spoke, he pulled the cloth down his face, revealing his features to the girl before him. It was a display of trust. "Heyyy... Rin! I uh, saw someone come in here uninvited, before me actually. Crazy how that works out..." His words fell off, offering a dumb grin at her attempt at sarcasm, "Yeah, yeah. Of course, here," he scrambled to slip the work boots off, of course he'd be respectful. If he'd had the chance to get into the estate (instead of just the yard surrounding) he totally would have taken his boots off. He dropped them with a thud onto the dirt next to himself. "So, like I was sayin', someone got in here before me and I heroically chased them out for you." If Joey wouldn't look like a total dickhead for it, he'd absolutely be patting himself on the back for this. He was soo slick. This couldn't backfire any way possible.
Before her, one of the legion members was sat on the ground. Falling flat on his ass like he had seen a ghost, oh wait. He had. Much to Rin's shock however, the legionnaire pulled down his mask... Revealing his face to her. Had this been the first time she had seen it? That didn't seem right but it was all that made sense. She didn't remember his face, maybe it had been a while but.. she never stayed around the legion long enough to even remember their names. If she had to make a guess, this one would be Joey. Frank didn't fit the dork sat infront of her.
"Hello." She said plainly. As she listened to his story, her face began to sour. It wasn't like she didn't believe him, she had no reason not too but she didn't really have a reason to believe him either, did she? She didn't think so at least but for now she'd interrogate, wait for a falter in his story. No falter? He's telling the truth and she can pretend to actually care and thank him for saving her nonexsistent life, so what if someone had come in? It's not like she can't hold her own...like she wouldn't come back incase something happened.
"Really now? Tell me then, Joey. Who was it..? How did you heroically save me?" Her voice was filled with a mix of genuine curiosity and sarcasm. She wasn't going to let her guard down yet, but she would be lying if she said he wasn't at least convincing of what he was saying.
Joey could feel his heart racing, and he felt like Rin knew it, too. Caught in a lie, Oliveira.
But maybe not. Maybe he could do this, it'd been a while since he'd honed his lying skills. They didn't work on Frank and Julie, and it just felt bad to lie to Suzie. The last time he lied was... Probably the job before his very last one, it was a desk job. 'Are you over twenty five?' 'Yes sir.' 'Do you provide for anyone in your household?' 'No, sir.'
Maybe not the most meaningful lies, but he could tug at heartstrings.
How did he heroically save her.... How DID he heroically save her?
"Okay, so... Uh, Jane! You know the," Joey made a motion with her hand, making a shapely gesture. It was crude, and uncalled for but... If you didn't know Jane, that was definitely something that stood out about her. "News reporter or whatever. She was here, coming to look at Kazan or whatever." He looked around, "And- And, I was passing through to get back to Ormond, you know. Where you can always find me... Er, except when you can't." He trailed off, letting his words sit in the air. "But my point was she was here to talk to Kazan, right? And like, I was all like "Hey, Jane! You can't be here, come on get out." and she was like "No, and also fuck you,"." Believable. Where did his pager come into this story? "Oh, and that beeping you heard was my pager." Just like that. "It must have scared her off more, got out of here before you could do your little spirit walk over." Damn, this was a poor lie. He unclipped his pager from his belt, presenting it to Rin. 911 still displayed on the front. Joey was numb to it now. He liked to think his boss continued to page him, but he knew better and that the line would be disconnected asap. Especially if anyone ever figured out it was the Legion that killed in the hardware shop.
"So yeah, you're welcome." He held his hand up, a gesture for her to help him up.
Rin watched as the legion member dug a hole for himself. Of course she hadn’t believed him, not that she could tell that he was lying.. cause really she couldn’t. He seemed genuine enough but why was he here in the first place? Surely he could have passed through anywhere else to find his way to ormond. Rin wasn’t sure his intentions but she never trusted anyone anymore, everyone had nefarious intent.
Rin looked at the pager, that part of his story seemed true so.. maybe the rest of it was to. What would he get from lying anyway? If Rin found out he was lying, he’d be driven out of the estate within minutes.. would he really want to be risking himself to talk to her? To visit the estate. She never thought the estate was that popular, certainly wasn’t when she was living in it.
Of course, Rin didn’t take his hand. She stared at it and made a face, one of disgust and anger. “You can get up yourself. You’re the big hero aren’t you?”
Rin didn't demolish him in one hit with any kind of sharp weapon, so that was a good sign, he thought. Actually he didn't think that was a good sign, that was an awesome sign.
If she caught onto his lying, well. Surely he wouldn't exist anymore. He knew that for a fact, considering the fact that she got to him so quick after his pager beeped, giving him away. (Not cool, boss, by the way. He's trying to visit a pretty girl. Really rude to page him now of all times!)
"Well, yea... Heroes need help sometimes too, Rin," He pouted, in a real pathetic manner to continue to play himself up. He couldn't drop the façade now, or else it'd be super obvious that he was bullshitting in the first place. "It's fine," He again played up the dramatics with a huff, getting himself off the ground, brushing his jeans off and straightening the straps over his hoodie.
"Anyway," He waved his hands in front of his face. "You got plans? Er, not that I do, but I figured I could hang out, since I'm here. Y'know?" It was a rambly risk, but it was one that he would take. He was going through so much to be in Rin's company right now.
"Totally cool to tell me to buzz off, won't hurt my feelings any." A lie from Joey Oliveira? Rare!
It would hurt his feelings, but he would respect it. He wasn't going to make Rin spend time with him, just because he had snuck in here and built up a whole lie of a story. One that had holes easily poked into it, if you knew who the fuck Jane Romero actually was. (Not Zarina Kassir, that was one thing Joey didn't know apparently!)
Rin was only half paying attention to Joey’s nonsense ramblings. It wasn’t that she didn’t care.. no that was exactly it. She didn’t care about what he had to say, in fact the sooner he had left the better. But in the back of her head, a more reasonable voice was begging her to give him a chance, hear him out. Afterall.. he had “saved” her. It was the least she could do.
and despite her best attempts to drown out that humanity in her. She listened to the voice.
She sighed, preparing herself for whatever dorky reaction Joey was bound to have. “Fine, I’m not particularly busy.. and I suppose I could always use someone as target practice.” She said with a long pause, giggling a bit to herself. “That was a joke. You can.. ‘hang’.. though I suppose you mean not literally. That would be weird, wouldn’t it.” Rin didn’t know why she was talking so much, usually she never behaved this way.
This stupid boys ramblings was rubbing off on her.
her guard was still high, the walls she built around herself were thick. Joey wouldn’t be able to break through them yet, but Rin couldn’t help but soften up a little. Must have been that lonely, so lonely and desperate for a friend that she’s willing to let the first boy she meets into her life.
"Target practice? Damn, that's all you see in me?" Joey went out on a branch, throw the Spirit a line. It was a risky move but... Maybe she would find it funny, and if it worked then he would shoot his shot. Theoretically. He would never move so fast with a girl, he had so few girlfriends when he was in high school, and he had no intentions to make any real moves in the Fog. Sure, girls were pretty and he admired so many of them but mostly he just wanted friends. Flirting as a joke just came naturally to him, though. It was a fun, light-hearted conversation starter. Usually it brought people's moods up, too. He took note of that fact more than anything else, people liked to recieve compliments. "Thanks, and... Man, I sure hope not literally. This doesn't look like that cowboy's realm to me," He always was wary about the nooses that still hung. And the few bodies that still hung there. It always icked him out. "Well, before I so heroically saved you, what were you up to?" He hummed, beginning to walk back towards the house — making himself immensely comfortable, assuming that he'd be allowed in to sit down.
Instinctively Rin found herself following beside Joey. Rin was always a follower, she followed her dads orders, she tried her best to follow latest fashion trends and she tried to follow the other students in a attempt to make any friends during her school years.
Joey had a presence about him, his mask was slightly unsettling but he was completely unlike his mask. Unlike his harrowing presence he was just.. a bit of a dork. She wondered what others could find so scary in him, maybe they didn’t find him scary at all. She knew that she didn’t find Susie scary, and that seemed to be shared amongst others.
“I don’t tend to do much here I’ll admit. Nothing much to do, but I was finding some time to do some origami..” she spoke quietly. Rin used to have many hobbies, she was into many instruments and still found the time to paint, draw and study but all of that was gone. She had no paint, there were no instruments that weren’t heavily damaged. All she really had was some crinkled paper, but it was fine. Origami could be calming.
It reminded her of her mother, her mother was the one who would show her how to make a crane, a fox and many other things Rin couldn’t remember and couldn’t make anymore.
“What about you? Before you heroically saved me.. what were you doing?”
