The half-completed generator rumbled in front of Leon as he desperately tried to get the damned wires to work, his attempts bearing only a slight pick up in the speed of the machine. Now was certainly not the time to be stuck trying to power the thing, but Meg and Jonah were already long dead, and Zarina was doing her best to keep the killer preoccupied so that Leon could power the exit gates.
Even if he managed to complete the generator before Zarina met the Tricker’s blade, their outlook was still grim. Leon had managed to only get hooked once after a stressful game of cat and mouse following his unhooking of Meg earlier in the trial, but Zarina would be taken up by the Entity if she were caught another time. Leon would usually prefer for himself to be the distraction in a situation like this, but it was at his fellow survivor’s insistence that he held back and worked towards their escape. He argued, though clearly not well enough, and ended up where he was.
A slight shock, enough to snap him out of his thoughts though not enough to cause the generator to blow, hit him as a couple of wires met.
“Shit,” Leon muttered, though he was pleased with the slight progress the fusing brought him. The momentary relief was soon met with dread as he heard a pitchy scream ring out much nearer to him than he would have hoped. His heartbeat wasn’t unnaturally heavy at the very least, so at least the killer wasn’t near enough to immediately come to target him. He was itching to run in and try his damn best to try and get Zarina away, but even a second in the vicinity of the Trickster would lead to him being one misstep away from death.
It hadn’t been long since Leon found himself transported from one hellscape to another, but he had witnessed enough needless death to understand that selfless sacrifice didn’t always lead to a happy ending for another. That was a lesson that took longer than any other to really set in, and even still each death Leon didn’t prevent weighed on him. The only solace, if it could even be considered that, was that death was impermanent. That didn’t make it any less painful, but at least it was all temporary.
Another scream, this one much more final, marked the beginning of the end. Leon was now alone with a killer he only knew as sadistic in his few dealings, left to search for the hatch hidden away in some unknown location or hope he could manage to activate an exit gate despite the powers in place to prevent just that.
Leon started off in the opposite direction of the scream, determined to make it out alive so that the operation wasn’t all for naught. Sneaking around wasn’t his strong suit necessarily, but he could do it well enough when the situation called for it. Navigating through decrepit houses and unnervingly manicured lawns, Leon felt that he might actually have a chance.
That was, at least, until he felt his heartbeat pick up much faster than it had any right to.
Well, shit.
